somewhere in washington ; sunday

Sam hadn't gone back home yet. Despite his emotional encounter a few days ago, he still hadn't been able to make myself him go back home. Right now, he was holed up in a small hotel room, nursing his lacerated palms and his ragged mind. He hadn't slept but he had rested which was a change from previously.

When Brooke appeared at the end of his bed, Sam wasn't even surprised. He didn't smile but he didn't turn away from her either even though she looked upset. He figured he knew why.

"I don't remember being you so stupid," she said without preamble. "Sam, really? Really."

"Brooke. Don't." Sam knew what he'd done. He knew. "I did what I thought was best."

"You ran away," Brooke said. "You hid yourself from me and ran away. How do you think that makes me feel? Huh?"

"Pretty shitty. Like I do," Sam said, shifting on the bed and wincing at the pain in his palms. He'd let them bleed too long and was weak from the loss of blood.

"You called for Douglas Montgomery," Brooke said, exasperated. "Of everyone that can help you, you called for him?"

"Well, I didn't get him," Sam said, frowning. "Okay? Look, I didn't know what else to do!"

"Sam." Brooke calmed down and moved closer to him, settling herself right beside him. He didn't look at her. "Samhain, look at me."

Sam couldn't ignore that tone of voice and his eyes slipped over to land on Brooke. "You think you're going to turn into someone like Douglas. Someone that evil."

Sam nodded meekly.

"Sam, you do remember what he did to me, right?" Brooke asked.

Sam shuddered and closed his eyes. "Yeah."

"And do you think you could do that to someone you love? Do you think you could have that evil inside you to order one of your minions to kill Ramon? Or Frank? What about Natalie?"

Sam winced and flinched away from her. "Stop it."

"No, because you're an idiot. You think you're going to turn into someone all dark and villianous and you don't think," Brooke continued. "You don't have that inside of you Sam. You have power, you have the potential and I won't deny that, but you're also compassionate and sympathetic and you love people, Sam. You love them."

"What if it's not enough?" Sam muttered quietly.

"Then, you make it enough," Brooke told him sternly. "I died because that man was evil. And you were there to make my afterlife better. Don't leave me now, Sam. I need you."

Sam shivered again and when he opened his eyes, Brooke was gone and he was alone.

He needed to go back home and face the music.
