room 216 ; thursday afternoon

Sam was convinced the island was never going to move again and the rain was never going to start. He'd been trying to hold off on catching a portal (which was still weird) for the sole purpose of buying a skateboard but he hadn't been able to wait any longer. After his records, his skateboard was probably his most prized possession and having it be covered in spray paint, stickers with rockets attached to the back made it pretty much useless to him.

He'd tossed that board in the trash today and headed off island. Yes, he'd gotten soaking wet, yes, his portal had been late (which meant he'd gotten even wetter), but he'd gotten off island and he'd made it to one of his favorite skate shops. A few hours later, he'd come out with a new board and a lighter mood.

Riding it on the island wasn't going to happen tonight because he'd had enough of the rain so Sam was riding his new board up and down the halls, testing out the design and craftsmanship of the longboard. The long, straight halls made for a nice smooth ride but Sam did make sure he watched out for passersby. He didn't need to run over anyone.

[Open post, boy's in the hallway so feel free to catch him there]

"I have never milked a cow." So that wasn't exactly what it was like to live outside a city. "And there are people. It's not like the Antarctic."

This said, Kate had grown up with very little in the way of friends or real socialization. It was her and Voron and that was all there was. Loneliness was all relative.

Kate nodded, tugging her hair back into a ponytail to get the dampness off her shoulders. "Savannah. But I've been all over."

"And it's less countryside, more wilderness." Because where the magic wasn't kept reined in by people (or where it couldn't be), things got a little out of control. Plants grew at record rates, and without machinery you just couldn't hope to keep it at bay.

"Hunt, train, walk--" Kate shrugged. "Sometimes, build shelter, yeah." He was right on that one. "I never used gum, but... Yeah, amongst other things."

"So you'd rather be attached to that out there," she said, indicating vaguely down the end of the hall, "than the sea?"

"They can be useful." She never claimed they weren't, and she spent time in them when she had to, but-- "I just don't like them." Bad experiences.

"I've seen the wrong side, I guess." Or the wrong cities. They tended towards the rougher end, in her future.

Kate snorted. Yeah. Right. "Atlanta's Pack have a Kodiak shifter as their pack executioner, I heard." If you got on the wrong side of them, you sure as hell believe in inner-city bear attack.

"You can't say 'never' about anything." Because disturbingly often, you'd find the magic making it so just out of spite.

"Shapeshifter, were... whatever you want to call them." They went by either, where she was from. "You don't want to mess with them. Asking for trouble."

Even Kate wasn't entirely sure she could take on some of the shifters she'd heard stories of.

"No one is as boring as a first impression." Everyone had their secrets. Some of them more interesting than others, and the more interesting ones were the ones to hide. Seeing his discomfort, she'd be willing to bet his story went somewhere beyond 'I met one'.

That said, she hadn't automatically pictured him as the sort to hang out with killers who grew foot long claws.

"But I'll keep that in mind. Not as dull as you'd like people to believe."
