Sam's day had started out mundane enough. He'd gotten up after a sleepless night, eaten some breakfast and laid around until finally deciding to give his mom a buzz. She'd caught him up on Haley's goings on and her own things before the conversation had veered towards his uncle. His mom hedged a bit, seeming like she knew something she wasn't telling him. He tried to push her into telling him but she refused and shut down on that subject.

He'd let it go and turned the topic towards asking about something that could be worn to protect regular (it was a subjective definition of that word he was using here) people from seeing what he saw at night. When his mom asked, he'd hedged and just tried to get the information out of her. If there was something, she didn't know what it was and she'd apologized.

The conversation had ended quietly and now Sam was sitting on the edge of his bed, giving that pouch he'd worn for so many years a look over. Maybe he could start wearing it again at night or something. It did help keep ghosts at bay and he did like to sleep sometimes.

He didn't know. And he couldn't really ask anyone else. He'd thought about Brid but shut that down immediately. The Council? Yeah, not sharing his personal life there. Maybe he'd just ask the next person that tried to beat him up.

It happened often enough.

Aw, look. This was something she hadn't done for a while.

"I missed your open door, Seattle." The solution to all her boredom.

"You really need a life if this is what you've been waiting for," Sam said, raising an eyebrow when he looked over at her. "Take up a hobby, Savannah."

"I have plenty of hobbies," Kate argued. "But it's a Sunday afternoon, and your doorway is so much more convenient than most of them." Wasn't she just full of flattery?

If only he lived on another floor. He'd get dropped in on so much less.

"Yeah, I don't believe you have any hobbies," Sam decided, shaking his head. "You're just full of lies and pretty words."

"You're so sweet," she drawled, shaking her head. "What did I do to get this distrust, again?"

"Who said you had to do anything?" Sam wondered, shaking his head. "Maybe it's just a natural talent you have. Ever think of that?"

"It's crossed my mind. But I've always been a believer in 'nurture over nature'." For oh so many reasons. The idea of being genetically predisposed to distrust didn't sit that well, given her background.

"And I'd prefer not to think I have an aura of creep."

"Was I not supposed to think you were creepy?" Sam asked, feigning surprise. "Oops."

Kate patted her chest with the flat of her palm, in a show of false dramatics. "I'm hurt. What's eating you today?" They were always a little like this, but she couldn't help but think it was coming across a little stronger than she remembered.

"Gnomes."

See, he could still be sarcastic.

"Nothing's eating me today. Why are you so sensitive?"

Kate shrugged, slouching back against his door frame. "I take issue with creepy," she decided. "I prefer 'menacing'. At least that sounds dramatic rather than stalkery."

"Fine, you can be menacing," Sam said, shaking his head. "I don't see anything wrong with creepy though. If I wanted to call you a stalker, I'd just call you a stalker."

"Well, that's comforting. I think," she decided, folding her arms. Her gaze briefly fell to whatever the hell he'd been fidgeting with, but apparently decided to suppress the curiosity to ask. She could hold off on pushing for that 'stalkery' label.

"You can be creepy," since he didn't mind it and all, "I'll be menacing, and we'll make a great team come Halloween." Which he probably wouldn't be here for, but details.

Natalie was still earwormed with musical songs. No surprise, really, since today was another rehearsal day. She was sort of humming them under her breath as she wandered down the hall to Sam's room.

"Hey," she said, only really pausing in the doorway before wandering on in.

Only pausing was a big step up from the hesitation they'd both tended to show in the past. He glanced up at her and even smiled when he realized who it was.

"Hey," he said, tossing his pouch back into his drawer and turning towards her. "I thought you'd be stuffing your brain with knowledge or something."

Natalie shrugged as she came closer. "Done with that for the week. Now I'm just waiting for rehearsal."

Floor show. Sigh.

"Yeah?" Sam asked, raising an eyebrow at that. "Nervous about the whole clothing thing yet?"

Natalie raised a shoulder in another half shrug, like 'eh'. She wasn't nervous, as such. Just... anticipating things.

"Not really."

[necroslacker]

"Do you know what you're gonna wear or has that not been decided?" Sam asked curiously. "Maybe it won't be so bad?"

"Hasn't been decided." She took a seat next to him. "I don't even know when it will. You'd think soonish, though."

"You think if it's something you don't agree with, you can ask for something else?" Sam wondered curiously.

[whenshewasnice]

"Probably." Of course, she'd already been talked into taking part in the first place, so who knew. She din't seem overly concerned, though. "But it's all just hypothetical for now."

"Of course," he said, reaching and brushing his fingers down her cheek very lightly. "Everything else okay?"

"Yes," she said, tilting her head just slightly into that touch. "How are you?"

Sam shrugged and kept touching her cheek with his fingertips. "Talked to my mom earlier."
